Hier ist die Zusammenfassung:
The story begins in a village called Grimley where miners families are threatened by the pit closure. One day Gloria appears at a rehearsal of her home towns brass band to ask if she could play the fugelhorn in the band. Not knowing that her real goal is to inform herself about the profit of the towns pit for the management of British Coal, the miners are fascinated after her first solo and allow her to play with them, which helps them to gain success in brass band competitions.
In Glorias mind it is better to conceal her intentions because of the distrust she could gain, when the miners, who are worried about their jobs, find out about her purpose. But despite Glorias work she and Andy, a coal worker and childhood friend of her are having a romantic relationship which soon ends in trouble, when Andy learns about Glorias intension. She desperately tries to explain herself by saying that she is with the band and is going to write in favor of them. Later when the colliery in Gimley is closed, Gloria discovers, that erasing the entire coal industry in Britain was planed years ago and the conclusion that she had to write only had the purpose to clam the protesting miner families.
Meanwhile, Phil, another member of the band, is highly in depted which causes his family to leave. He tries to gain money by playing a clown on childrens parties.
Later his father, Danny, the committed conductor of the band, is hospitalized after collapsing on the street. Phil has a mental breakdown and tries to hang himself. Arriving at the hospital after the attempted suicide he criticizes his father for caring to much about music and to less about peoples feelings, informing him that the band is not going to the final competition.
But unexpectebly Gloria shows up and gives the money she gained from her work to the band on order to convince them to go to the finals. The band decides to play and leaves a note for Danny, who arrives from hospital just in time to see them win. After Dannys touching speech, in which he states that peoples fates are more important then music and money, refusing the trophy, the band is shown traveling through London playing their instruments.
